The Great Voltigeur Stakes at York's Ebor Meeting is one of the leading trials for the St Leger at Doncaster. The Group Two contest is used by many of the best trainers in the UK with their Classic contenders.
This year's field at York is set to be a strong one, with challengers from the UK and Ireland set to be involved in the day one contest at the Yorkshire racecourse.
Irish Champion Trainer O'Brien won the Great Voltigeur Stakes for a fourth time in 2023 when Continuous prevailed before going on to win the St Leger a month later. O’Brien will be hoping Illinois can complete that same double this year. He is the 4/1 favourite at https://www.paddypower.com/horse-racing for the York contest.
Illinois is likely to be one of the leading racing predictions for the two leading three-year-old races later in the campaign as his trainer is in great form this season. O’Brien won the Derby with City Of Troy, while at Royal Ascot, Kyprios landed the Ascot Gold Cup.

O'Brien's latest St Leger contender showcased his stamina at Royal Ascot when he won the Group Two Queen’s Vase, as you can read at https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport. He stayed on strongly under the hands of Ryan Moore to finish ahead of his stablemate Highbury.
On his latest outing, the son of Galileo fell just short at the highest level when he was second in the Group One Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp. It was a run that will have encouraged his trainer ahead of his Ebor Meeting appearance.

Lingfield Derby Trial winner Ambiente Friendly has finished in the placings in two Classics this season. He was second in the Derby behind City Of Tory, while in the Irish equivalent of the race, he finished third in the contest won by Los Angeles.
Trainer James Fanshawe opted against running his colt in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes in favour of the Great Voltigeur Stakes. He also has entries in the Juddmonte International, Irish Champion Stakes and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
The British horse has some solid form with the Great Voltigeur Stakes favourite, as he finished ahead of Illinois at Lingfield back in May.
Two-time winner King's Gambit is a lightly raced colt who has a growing reputation in his division. The three-year-old ran well at York on his latest appearance when he was second of four runners in the Group Two York Stakes. He just got headed inside the final furlong of that contest by Alflaila.
Henry Charlton's runner will be stepping in distance from 1m2f to 1m6f for the first time in the Great Voltigeur Stakes. His pedigree suggests he will have the stamina to handle the extra half mile in trip. He will be vying for his second success of the season, as he prevailed on his opening start of the campaign at Newbury.
The 2024 Great Voltigeur Stakes has a purse of £200,000, with £113,420 set to go to the winner of the race.
