The European challenge is a central part of the Breeders' Cup story, and Keeneland 2026 gives British and Irish fans a reason to look across the Atlantic at the end of October.
The Breeders’ Cup is considered the World Championship of Horse Racing. Breeders; Cup Keeneland 2026 will take place on Friday Oct. 30 and Saturday Oct. 31 in Kentucky. This is the fourth time Keeneland will host the event.
Whether at Breeders’ Cup Keeneland or anywhere else, these are the dates trainers and owners around the horse racing universe circle on the calendar. There are 14 Grade 1 races over two days with more than $34 million in purses.
Breeders’ Cup European runners are out in force from the UK and Ireland, and from other countries in Europe and Japan. Some of the European-trained runners have earned their way into the races through Challenge Series qualifiers, known as win and you’re in. There has been free-to-air Breeders' Cup UK TV coverage as the event has grown through the years.
These are the final huge race days on the calendar. A who’s who of the sport will be on hand.
Which are the 10 biggest horse races in the world? Glad you asked.
The win and you’re in races of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series will see horses from Europe and Ireland in the fields. Mission Central from Ireland won the King Charles III Stakes and is said to be headed for the Turf Sprint. Other Irish horses to consider include Pershada, who won the Molecomb and Norfolk and is now pointed toward the Juvenile Turf Sprint.
Those from Great Britain said to be on the road to Keeneland, are Kalpana (King George VI and Queen Elizabeth), Item (Juddmonte Invitational), and Orthodox (Norfolk) Juvenile Turf Sprint.
The horses from Britain and Ireland are forces to reckon with in the races on the turf. That is where these horses make their mark; they often come to the Breeders’ Cup and put on a show.
If you are looking for a trainer to track it would be Aidan O’Brien. Aidan O’Brien Breeders’ Cup accomplishments include 21 winners, equal to the ones held by U.S. trainer Bob Baffert.
O’Brien is one of the most iconic flat trainers. Who are some of the others?

British Champions Day happens two weeks before the Breeders’ Cup, this year on Oct. 17. It is a one day event at the Ascot racecourse. Prize money goes for around $5 million U.S. This is different from the Breeders’ Cup, as it takes place over a single day. There are some who argue the Breeders’ Cup is better suited as a one day event.
The first day is portrayed as future stars. It is for the industry, since it is conducted on a Friday and features 2-year-olds. As much as the sport wants to grow itself, racing 2-year-olds in these events, which feature many European horses in turf events, has yet to transcend. Hardcore horse racing fans will buy into it. However, the one-day British Champions Day and the second day of the Breeders’ Cup carry far greater weight outside the industry when it comes to interest.
Keeneland has a dirt track and a turf surface. The European/Irish horses are primarily used to running on the turf. There have been rare occasions where horses have come over from Europe and tried the dirt. It is not their specialty. The turf surface at Keeneland is regarded as one that is kind and fair to horses from everywhere. Remember, this is the “Bluegrass State” so it would follow that any turf surface would be as pristine as they can get, weather permitting.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic is the biggest race on the two-day card. It attracts the top horses in the featured division. This year’s race is expected to feature Japan’s standout Forever Young. He won the race and is looking to repeat.
The dirt races will feature American horses and some from Japan, primarily.
The turf is a different story. Every Breeders’ Cup, horse racing fans and the industry brace for the arrival of the European-bred horses. This is their surface. They specialize on running over grass and are dynamic.
If you’re looking for a potential barometer (and by no means is this a guarantee) six of the seven turf races at Keeneland during the 2022 Breeders’ Cup were won by horses shipping in from Europe.
Keeneland is one of the most charming racetracks in the United States, arguably the world. There are a couple of three-week meets during the regular year schedule. The Breeders’ Cup stretches it a bit.
Lexington, Kentucky exudes charm and loves its horse racing. There are crowds from all generations that come to the track, which shares the city with the University of Kentucky. Many students find their way to the track. This will be the fourth BC at Keeneland. The others were in 2015, 2020, and 2022.
Horses like Rhetorical, Emphatic and Evanescence are among those who won their way into assorted Breeders’ Cup events, with wins over the Keeneland surfaces.
Through TV: ITV has held free-to-air UK rights since 2017 (ITV4 carried the 2025 meeting), with Sky Sports Racing and Racing TV showing the full card.
With 14 Grade 1s packed into two days, Keeneland rewards a bit of homework; BetUS's Breeders' Cup guide breaks down the card, the contenders and the European challengers ahead of October 30th–31st.
Friday October 30 and Saturday the 31st at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky. This is the 43rd Breeders’ Cup, and it features 14 Grade 1 races. The UK is four hours ahead of Kentucky that week.
Winners of designated races in England, Ireland and France (among other countries) earn a fees-paid berth in a corresponding Breeders' Cup race. Horses can still be entered by their connections, but the focus is on the Challenge Series.
ITV4 in 2025 has shown selected races free-to-air in recent years, while Sky Sports Racing and Racing TV have covered the full meeting.
European runners have long been a feature of the turf races, with European-bred horses prominent at the 2022 Keeneland meeting. Aidan O'Brien has 21 Breeders' Cup winners.
